Volcanic Ash Cloud Shuts Down Airports in Southern Spain, North Africa

The volcanic ash clouds from Iceland continue to wreak havoc on travelers across Europe and now airports in North Africa are feeling the effect as Morocco has been forced to shut down a number of airports.

Southern Spain has also closed a number of airports as the volcanic ash cloud drifts in the path of departing and landing planes.

It has been almost a month since the volcanic eruption in Iceland produced ash clouds made up of rock and sand tens of thousands of feet into the air. With airports forced to cancel thousands of flights due to the danger posed by the clouds travelers were left waiting in airports for up to a week.

The ash clouds initially affected only European airports but on Tuesday the closures in Morocco marked the first time North Africa had been forced to close airports.

Making the situation even more frustrating is the ash cloud is believed to be the same from previous weeks as it continues to be carried by the winds. That frustration was expressed by the Institute of Earth Sciences at Iceland University which said “We really don't know when it will settle down. So even if the volcano stops, we can look at this problem for a couple of weeks after.”
