U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Pledges Security Support for Afghanistan

U.S. secretary of State Hillary Clinton has told Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzai the United States remains committed to ensuring his country remained secure even after the American troops leave.

Clinton said “We will not abandon the Afghan people. Our civilian commitment will remain long into the future.” Adding, “The ability to disagree on issues of importance to our respective countries and peoples is not an obstacle to achieving our shared objectives. Rather, it reflects a level of trust that is essential to any meaningful dialogue and enduring strategic partnership.”

Karzai is in Washington for four days and is scheduled to meet with President Barack Obama on Wednesday.

The trip is being billed as an attempt to repair a shaky relationship between the U.S and Afghanistan since Karzai won reelection in last year’s presidential race. That election was considered corrupt on many levels and the U.S. was critical of Karzai’s victory.

With that criticism came reaction from Karzai who accused the U.S. of trying to undermine his presidency and threatened to join the Taliban. While the rhetoric has cooled considerably the two sides still have their obvious differences and that is what Karzai’s trip is trying address.
