An old saying goes: “There, but for the Grace of God, goes I.” Many people may often think this when they see a person who is addicted to drugs or alcohol. It is true that a strong spiritual background can prevent substance abuse; however, the question still often arises as to why some people become addicted and others don’t. The truth is that several factors play a part in who may and may not suffer from drug addiction.
One factor is genetics. Studies have shown that some people may actually have a genetic predisposition to addiction. And, when one thinks about it, how often have people seen families where one or more relatives have addiction problems?
The only way to overcome the genetic predisposition is to abstain from any and all alcohol consumption and drug use. Some people are able to do this, while others are not. Still others may not ever touch alcoholic beverages or illicit drugs; however, something happens to cause them to have to take narcotic drugs for a short period of time, and the predisposition can cause prescription drug addiction.
Environment is another factor. A person’s home life, socioeconomic status, and other things that he is exposed to in his day-to-day life can make one more prone to begin drinking or taking drugs, which then can lead to addiction. A third factor is development, and this is what can cause so many young people to engage in substance abuse and ultimately become addicted. The part of their brain that helps them make wise decisions and good choices has not matured yet; this can cause them to succumb to peer pressure more readily.
A good drug rehab program, such as the one at G&G Holistic Drug Rehab does not concern itself with why a person engages in substance abuse or becomes addicted. Rather, the program concentrates on helping a person overcome the addiction and begin living a normal life again, alcohol- or drug-free.
