British Prime Minister Gordon Brown Announcing Resignation Following Labour’s Breakdown in Talks with Liberal Democrats

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown will be resigning from his office after his Labour party failed to form a coalition government with the Liberal Democrats following last week’s elections.

Brown succeeded Tony Blair as prime minister in 2007 but Thursday’s vote produced more seats for the Tories. Brown had initially said he would resign as prime minister so that the Labour party could form a coalition with the Liberal Democrats but that plan has fallen apart as the Liberal Dems appear to be on the brink of a deal with the Tories.

The Tories collected the most seats in last Thursday’s general election but failed to secure an overall majority, making it necessary for them to form a coalition with the Liberal Dems. Talks between the two sides have apparently generated a deal that should be solidified shortly, signaling the end of Brown’s reign as prime minister.
