Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick Makes Television Apology Wednesday

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick made a public service announcement Wednesday, apologizing for his past conduct.

In a 10-minute appearance, Kilpatrick, along with wife Carlita, apologized for the recent scandal two weeks ago. The mayor of Detroit and his chief of staff, Christine Beatty, were charged with perjury after lying about an affair from 2002-03. Beatty resigned amidst the scandal.

Another scandal arose this past weekend as it was reported that Kilpatrick spent the night in an Asheville, NC hotel with another woman. The woman checked into the hotel under the name "Carmen Slowski" after the Slowskys, the name of the turtles from Comcast's recent advertisements.

"I want to make a public apology to my entire family, and specifically to the four people who I love the most in the world," he said, referring to his wife and three sons.

"I am the mayor," said Kilpatrick, 37, who could run for a third term next year. "I made the mistake. "I am accountable."

Kilpatrick rejected rumors that he might resign. "I would never quit on you," he declared. "Ever."

His wife, Carlita, also spoke. "I am angry, I am hurt and I am disappointed," she said, holding his hand. "But there is no question I love my husband."
