Mayor of Detroit Issues Televised Apology with Wife Carlita Kilpatrick

The Mayor of Detroit, Kwame Kilpatrick, has issued a televised apology after his extramarital affair was uncovered last week. Sexually explicit text messages between Kilpatrick and his chief of staff Christine Beatty were released to the media.

Kilpatrick and Beatty are being investigated for perjury as both lied under oath last year about the affair. Beatty resigned on Monday while Kilpatrick remained in seclusion until his television appearance Wednesday night.

Kilpatrick, 37, made the appeal alongside his wife Carlita Kilpatrick in a Detroit church. In his 10 minute speech, the mayor apologized for “the embarrassment and disappointment” he caused.

“I want to make a public apology to my entire family, and specifically to the four people who I love the most in the world,” Kilpatrick said of his wife and their three sons.

“I am angry, I am hurt and I am disappointed. But here is no question I love my husband,” said Carlita who also urged the city to stay loyal to her husband.

Kilpatrick said he would be returning to work Thursday.
