Abu Laith al-Libi, Top al-Qaeda Leader, Killed

Abu Laith al-Libi, a senior al-Qaeda leader, was killed this week. He is believed to have been killed in Pakistan after a missile hit a compound late Monday.

A Web site used by militant groups, which is monitored by the United States SITE Institute, posted a message confirming his death. “We congratulate the Islamic nation for the martyrdom of the sheik, the lion, Abu Laith al-Libi,” the messages reads.

Pakistan officials say they do not know who is responsible to the missile attack. An intelligence official, who did not want to be identified, said at least 12 people were killed but the bodies were mangled making it hard to identify them.

Al-Libi is believed to have been behind the bombing of the U.S. base at Bagram in February 2007 while Vice President Dick Cheney was visiting. He was on the list of 12 most wanted men by the U.S.
