Gary Hilton Gets Life in Prison for Meredith Emerson Murder

Gary Michael Hilton pleaded guilty today in the murder of 24-year-old Georgia hiker Meredith Emerson. Hilton, 61, was sentenced to life in prison and will be eligible for parole in 30 years.

Emerson went missing New Year’s Day after going hiking with her dog Ella in North Georgia Mountains. Georgia’s chief medical examiner said Emerson died January 4 from blunt force trauma to the head and was decapitated after death. Hilton led police to Emerson’s body on January 7. Hilton reportedly gave the information in exchange for being ineligible for the death penalty.

Emerson’s parents made emotional statements in court today. “I feel no punishment for Mr. Hilton is too great. I only pray that he suffers immensely for his heinous acts,” said Meredith’s father, David.

Susan, her mother, said she wasn’t upset that Hilton did not receive the death penalty. “I feel like he should slowly rot. As far as I am concerned, there is no such thing as justice in this case. Nothing will bring our daughter back,” said Susan.

Hilton is also being investigated in the murder of Florida hiker Cheryl Dunlap and North Carolina hiking couple Irene and John Bryant.
