Plane Crash at Libya’s Tripoli International Airport Leaves more than 100 Dead

An Airbus 330 plane carrying more than 100 passengers crashed upon landing at the Tripoli International Airport in Libya and killing all aboard except for a 10-year-old boy.

Afriqiyah Airways flight 8U771 departed Johannesburg’s airport Wednesday morning and had not reported any problems prior to approach at the Tripoli airport. According to witnesses the plane exploded as it touched down, scattering debris across the surrounding area.

News of the plane crash was posted on the Afriqiyah Airways website, noting “We are very sorry to announce the tragic loss of Afriqiyah Airways flight 8U771 from Johannesburg in an accident during landing at Tripoli International Airport at 04:00 UTC (06:00 am Tripoli time) today Wednesday 12 May.”

The statement continued, “We extend our deepest sympathy to the families and friends of the victims. The search and rescue mission has now been completed.”

It is reported that 104 people were aboard the flight, 11 of which were crew members. Miraculously, a 10-year-old boy was said to have survived the plane crash and is said to be undergoing surgery but his condition has not been released.
