Jerry Joseph led West Texas’ Permian High School to the boy’s basketball state playoffs last season and was considered a serious prospect by coaches as the 6-foot-5 player shined on the court, earning newcomer of the year in District 2 5A.
The only problem was that the 16-year-old Joseph was actually Guerdwich Montimere, a 22-year-old naturalized U.S. citizen from Haiti who had already had a stint in high school basketball down in Florida several years ago.
According to reports Montimere enrolled at Permian High School in Odessa, West Texas and presented himself to head coach Danny Wright as a homeless teen. As Jerry Joseph the 22-year-old Montimere was an integral part in the school’s playoff run.
Things fell apart for Montimere last month when he was noticed at an amateur tournament in Little Rock, Arkansas by Florida basketball coaches. Montimere was confronted by police and eventually arrested for providing false information to an officer; he is being held on $500 bond and could face up to six months in jail if convicted.
