U.S. President Barack Obama, fresh off talks with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, has said he backs Afghanistan’s efforts to engage Taliban militants that have renounced violence and split from al-Qaeda.
Obama and Karzai held talks in Washington on Wednesday as part of the Afghan leader’s four day visit in the U.S. capital. Those talks were designed to repair what had become a tense relationship between the two countries, tensions that Obama called “simply overstated.”
Following their talks Obama appeared with Karzai at a joint news conference and told reporters the U.S. would support Afghanistan’s efforts to “open the door to Taliban, who cut their ties with al-Qaeda and renounced violence.”
Karzai has been working on an initiative that would encourage Taliban militants to lay down their weapons in exchange for money and jobs. That initiative, Karzai believes, will help curb the insurgency that has continued to threaten everyday life for most citizens.
