Airports in Spain, Portugal and Morocco Reopen Following Ash Cloud from Iceland’s Volcano

Airport officials in Spain, Portugal and Morocco have said the ash cloud from Iceland’s Eyjafjallajoekull volcano no longer posed a threat to flights and have lifted restrictions that had stranded passengers for several days.

Spain had a number of airports closed since Saturday after the ash clouds threatened to interrupt flight paths. Those threats eventually led to Portugal closing airports and then Morocco, the first African country to impose restrictions since the volcanic eruption last month.

That eruption virtually paralyzed air travel in Europe as safety officials feared the ash clouds would jam plane engines and cause catastrophic failure. For weeks hundreds of thousands of passengers were left stranded or forced to find alternate means of transportation.

The closures not only caused problems for passengers but cost airlines hundreds of millions of dollars, a fact that led Eurocontrol, the European air traffic control agency, to reexamine their criteria for shutting down airports due to the ash clouds.

Volcanologists have said the ash clouds from Iceland’s volcano could remain for weeks as the winds continue to move it through the atmosphere.
