John Lennon “More Popular than Jesus” Audio Recording to Sell in Auction this June

A recording of the August 17, 1966 Beatles press conference, in which John Lennon said The Beatles were more popular than Jesus will be going to auction in June, according to Reuters. This recording is the only known copy of the infamous conference, which is expected to fetch around $20,000 at auction in June.

The recording features both John Lennon ad Paul McCartney joking about how long The Beatles would be together. In the recording The Beatles also discuss the issue of Vietnam. The press conference in which the recording took place was held in Toronto at the King Edward Hotel.

Following the recording, journalists had many questions in regarding the “Jesus” remark which was made. The two reels of the conference were made by a young Beatles fan and journalist who was present at the conference. He tried to sell the tapes back in 1966 but nobody saw the value in it.

For the last 40 years, the two reels lay in a drawer but now they carry and estimated price of $20-25,000 at auction.
