Stocks are Moderately Higher Following a Flurry of Economic Readings and  Microsoft's Bid for Yahoo

Stocks are higher heading into afternoon action as M&A activity is fueling optimism following Microsoft's offer to buy Yahoo for $44.6 billion. Adding to the enthusiasm, the ISM Manufacturing Index unexpectedly rose back into expansionary levels, but sentiment is being limited as the labor report showed the first decline in payrolls in over four years. In other equity news, Google missed earnings estimates, but Electronic Arts, Exxon Mobil, and Chevron topped expectations. Elsewhere, CNBC reported that 8 banks have formed a consortium to bail out a struggling bond insurer, and Motorola said it is exploring a structural and strategic realignment

 

In afternoon trading, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 28.21, or 0.22 percent, to 12,678.57 after climbing more than 200 points Thursday. Early in Friday's session the Dow had been up nearly 120 points. Broader stock indicators also rose. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 7.71, or 0.56 percent, to 1,386.26, and the Nasdaq composite index advanced 4.77, or 0.20 percent, to 2,394.63.

Bond prices rose. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note fell to 3.58 percent from 3.59 percent late Thursday.

The dollar rose against other major currencies, while gold prices fell.

Light, sweet crude oil fell $2.44 to $89.31 on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
