Renegade Red Shirt Supporter Shot in Thailand as Troops Try to Seal Protest Camp in Bangkok

A suspended Thai general who has supported the efforts of anti-government Red Shirt protesters is believed to be in serious condition after being shot during an operation in which government troops attempted to shut down protest camps in Bangkok.

According to reports Khattiya Sawasdipol, referred to as Seh Daeng (Commander Red), was shot shortly after the government’s deadline for the camps to be sealed. During that operation gunfire was exchanged between the protesters and troops with several casualties now being reported.

Seh Daeng has supported the Red Shirts call for Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to dissolve parliament and call new elections. The renegade general has advised the Red Shirts on military strategy and has encouraged a hard-line approach to the standoff.

For several months the Red Shirts have occupied parts of Bangkok, setting up camps in government offices and buildings. The military was given a deadline to shut down those camps and encouraged protesters to evacuate the area prior to the recent violence.
