Maria Lauterbach Remembered by Family and Friends at Burial Service

St. Christopher Catholic Church near Dayton, Ohio was packed with hundreds of mourners on Saturday as they remembered Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach, the pregnant Marine that was murdered last December.

The discovery of Lauterbach’s charred remains, along with the remains of her fetus, last month sparked a massive manhunt for fellow Marine Cpl. Cesar Laurean. Lauterbach had accused Laurean of rape last May while the two were stationed at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.

Despite the accusations the two remained on the same base and worked within proximity of each other, a fact that has angered her family. They have expressed outrage with the manner in which authorities handled her claims.

Lauterbach disappeared last December but Laurean maintained his innocence in the rape claims and remained at Lejeune. But in January Laurean fled North Carolina, leaving a note for his wife saying the Lauterbach had slit her own throat. Officials then discovered her body in a shallow pit in the Marine’s backyard.

Officials have continued to search for Laurean and believe the Marine is somewhere in Mexico.
