Recently sworn-in Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has named Namadi Sambo as his new vice-president, a close friend to former President Umaru Yar’Adua who passed away last month.
While Jonathan has named Sambo as his vice-president the 57-year-old Kaduna state governor will need to be approved by both houses of parliament, something that is widely expected.
Jonathan’s decision is seen as a safe choice and could be evidence that he plans on seeking election in 2011 as the candidate of the governing People’s Democratic Party. Jonathan, who served as vice-president under Yar’Adua, is from the south and the PDP has a practice of alternating power between northern and southern candidates.
That being said, Sambo is not seen as a legitimate candidate for the PDP leadership position and many believe Jonathan selected the unassuming governor because he would not pose a threat to his presidential run.
