The lone survivor from Wednesday’s plane crash at Libya’s Tripoli International Airport is said to be in stable condition after undergoing a number of surgeries to repair multiple fractures in both legs.
Officials have not releases the identity of the survivor, only saying he was a 9-year-old Dutch boy who had been aboard the doomed Afriqiyah Airways flight with his parents. The boy’s parents were among the 103 people killed when the flight slammed into the ground as it attempted to land.
While no official word on the boy’s identity has been released the Dutch foreign ministry has said the child identified himself as Ruben and told them he was from the southern Dutch city of Tilburg. Of the 103 killed in the plane crash 70 were said to be Dutch nationals.
The Afriqiyah Airways flight had been traveling from Johannesburg, South Africa and included passengers from South Africa, Finland, Zimbabwe, the Philippines, Germany, Britain, France, Libya and Holland.
Investigators are still searching for clues as to what caused the plane to explode upon impact but according to the Libyan Transportation Ministry terrorism has been ruled out.
