Earthquakes Kill at Least 39 in Rwanda and Congo, Hundreds Injured

A pair of earthquakes rocked parts of Rwanda and Congo on Sunday, leaving at least 39 dead and more than 400 injured.

 

The death toll is expected to rise as search and rescue crews continue to try and rescue victims trapped beneath fallen buildings and homes.

 

Congo was hit by a magnitude 6.0 early Sunday with the most damage occurring in the city of Bukavu where five people were confirmed dead and more than 150 injured. Hours after the quake in Congo a magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck the rural Rusizi District in Rwanda. At least 34 people were killed, many of whom were in church at the time.
