Clashes in Bangkok Leave at least Four Dead as Thai Forces Open Fire on Protesters

The Thai government’s attempts to eradicate red-shirt protesters from camps set up in the capital city of Bangkok have turned deadly after forces opened fire on the demonstrators, killing at least four people.

Soldiers have been trying to regain control of Bangkok for nearly two months after the red-shirts seized control of several government offices and buildings and demanded Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva dissolve parliament and resign from his post.

On Friday a new level of violence was reached after protesters responded to the shooting of a renegade general who supports the anti-government demonstrators. Khattiya Sawasdipol, known better as Seh Daeng, had been helping the protesters with their military campaign when he was shot in the head on Thursday. Seh is now in an intensive care unit in a Bangkok hospital and is not expected to survive. News of Seh’s shooting has ignited new clashes between the protesters and troops.

While there have been several attempts by international voices to bring an end to the clashes in Bangkok that appears unlikely as the protesters have fortified their camps and appear ready to engage government troops if they attempt to attack.

The Thai government has insisted they would not push the violence, opting instead to cut off vital resources like electricity and water to the camps.
