The Atlanta Hawks have opted to let head coach Mike Woodson go, ending his six year tenure on the bench.
Woodson’s contract expired on Monday and instead of resigning him the Hawks said they would head in a different direction. What that direction is remains to be seen as Woodson took the Hawks from a 13-win team his first year to a 53-win team this year, with each year being an improvement over the last.
While Woodson produced strong regular seasons it was the team’s performance in the playoffs over the past two years that likely cost him his job. The past two seasons the Hawks have survived the first round of the playoffs only to be swept in the second round.
This year’s second round sweep at the hand of the Orlando Magic was particularly painful as it marked the largest margin of victory in any four-game sweep in NBA postseason history.
