Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (NYSE: GWR) reported Thursday that its traffic rose 16 percent in April due partly to growth in the Northeastern U.S., according to Associated Press.
Metals traffic rose 81 percent mostly due to increased steel shipments in the railroad's New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania region and the South.

Genesee's shipments of coal, coke and ore as well as its "other" category were also driven by growth in the New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
Shipments rose in seven out of 10 commodity groups. Shipments of minerals and stone, pulp and paper and petroleum products fell from a year earlier.
The company moved a total of 72,023 carloads last month, compared with 62,044 a year earlier.
Genesee owns short line and regional freight railroads in the United States, Canada, Australia and the Netherlands.
