Thailand Officials Reject UN-Backed Mediation Talks with Red Shirt Protesters

The violent standoff between Thailand’s government and red shirt protesters is likely to continue as officials have rejected a proposal for UN-backed mediation talks, saying they did not need outside help to handle internal affairs.

Protesters have occupied government offices and buildings in the capital city of Bangkok for more than two months, demanding Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva resign and call new elections but those calls have been ignored. Instead, the Thai government has responded by sending in troops to eliminate the camps erected in Bangkok.

Those actions turned deadly on Thursday as troops fired live rounds at protesters and over the past four days at least 29 people have been killed.

A blockade of the controlled areas has been put in place, leaving protesters with a limited amount of food and water while a state of emergency has been declared in more than 20 provinces across the country to prevent more protesters flowing into Bangkok. Despite the government’s actions the protesters have vowed to continue their fight and have dug in, ready to engage troops.

Abhisit has said there would be no backing down in the government’s efforts to end the protests, saying “We cannot leave the country in a situation where people who don't obey the law are holding hostage the people of Bangkok, as well as the center of the country.”
