Islamist rebels have attacked Somalia’s parliament, firing mortar bombs at the Mogadishu building as MPs met for the first time this year.
The rebel attack sparked retaliatory fire from African Union peacekeepers and when order was restored at least nine people were dead and more than 20 left injured.
According to reports the rebels had launched their attack from Mogadishu’s main market at Bakara, a stronghold for the Islamists. Several shops in the market caught fire as African Union peacekeepers returned fire and it is believed a number of shopkeepers were killed as a result.
The violence outside parliament matched the tension felt inside the building as MPs voted to oust the speaker, Sheikh Adan Madobe, after he suggested Somali President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed appoint a new prime minister.
Sunday’s meeting of parliament was the first time MPs gathered since December.
