Maoist Rebels Attack Bus in Central India, at least 20 Feared Dead

A bus traveling in central India has reportedly been attacked by Maoist rebels, leaving at least 20 dead and there are fears that the number could be significantly higher.

It is believed the bus, said to be carrying police officers as well as civilians, struck a landmine as it travelled through the Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh state. While the initial death toll has been placed at 20 it has been suggested that as many as 50 people may have died in the attack.

Just last month 75 police officers were killed during a rebel attack in Dantewada.

Dantewada is considered a rebel stronghold of the Maoists who have been staging decades-long fight against the Indian government for what they say are the rights of the rural poor.
