Thai Protesters Defy Government Orders, Remain Entrenched in Bangkok Camp

Thai protesters who have entrenched themselves in a heavily fortified camp inside the capital of Bangkok have defied the orders of the government, refusing to abandon their stronghold and continuing their demand that  Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva resign and new elections be called.

Military forces have been working to isolate the camp; cutting off electricity, water and food to the protesters in hopes of breaking their will. That has been harder than expected for the government as the protesters have remained spirited and have engaged in numerous attacks with troops.

Those attacks have led to at least 36 deaths and several hundred injuries since Thursday.

The violence has spiked since a renegade general supporting the protesters campaign against the government was shot. Khattiya Sawasdipol, better known as Seh Daeng, was shot in the head last week almost instantly setting off new clashes and leading the military to declare a shoot on site policy for some areas around the camp.

On Monday Daeng died from his wounds and that could fan the flames even further if the two sides aren’t able to come to an agreement soon. The UN has volunteered to help mediate in the talks but the government has refused the offer, saying they did not need outside help to solve an internal issue.
