In an attempt to quell some of the political infighting within parliament Somalia’s President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed has said he will appoint a new prime minister, causing further instability in a transitional government already facing trouble from Islamist extremists attempting to take control of the country.
Sharif has been losing popularity as accusations of corruption and ineffectiveness continue to mount and the decision to replace Prime Minister Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke is seen as a move to pacify some of the skeptics.
Over the weekend calls to remove the PM were made by speaker of parliament Sheikh Aden Madobe and that caused a major division within the government. Madobe’s actions led to his dismissal and while Sharif has avoided taking sides in the argument he seems content with both men being removed from office.
While Madobe has stepped aside without a fight it remains unclear whether the PM will do the same.
