Iraqi Security Forces Detain al-Qaeda Militant Suspected of Plotting Attack on World Cup

Iraqi security forces have reportedly detained an al-Qaeda militant who was said to have been plotting an attack in South Africa during next month’s World Cup.

According to Maj. Gen. Qassim al-Moussawi, a spokesman for Baghdad security services, the al-Qaeda militant was an officer in the Saudi army and had been planning to carry out a terrorist attack during football’s premier event.

The Saudi officer was identified as Abdullah Azam Saleh al-Qahtani and during a press conference al-Moussawi said the suspect had been in contact with Ayman al-Zawahiri, considered al-Qaeda’s number two man.

In addition to the planned World Cup attack, al-Moussawi is believed to be responsible for a number of attacks within Baghdad since 2004.
