Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan has had his selection for vice-president approved as both houses of the country’s parliament confirmed Namadi Sambo on Tuesday.
Sambo was nominated last week as Jonathan took full reign as Nigeria’s president following the death of Umaru Yar’Adua. Jonathan served as vice president under Yar’Adua and was considered the main candidate for the People’s Democratic Party when elections are held in 2011.
That changed when he took office as president as the PDP has said they will continue with their tradition of alternating power between a northerner and southerner. Jonathan, from the south, has not revealed what his intentions are for next year’s elections but because he did not serve a full term as Nigeria’s leader he could push for his party’s nomination.
Many have suspected that Jonathan selected Sambo as his vice president due to his unassuming nature and lack of a power-base, meaning he would not be a real challenger for the PDP’s leadership position next year.
