France Releases Convicted Murderer of Former Iranian Prime Minister Shapour Bakhtiar

France has released the man convicted of murdering former Iranian Prime Minister Shapour Bakhtiar, deporting Ali Vakili Rad back to Tehran shortly after he was escorted from his prison.

The release comes less than a week after Iran released Clotilde Reiss, a French academic who had been convicted of espionage following the country’s presidential election. While French officials agreed to release Rad they have denied any connection between his deportation and the freedom granted Reiss by an Iranian court.

Bakhtiar had been the last prime mister to serve under Shah Reza Pahlavi before the Islamic Revolution of 1979. He fled to Paris in 1980 and in 1991 he was found stabbed and strangled in his house. Rad was convicted of the murder in 1994 and had been in eligible for parole last year.

While the French have denied any deal took place with Iran the release of Reiss was a surprise to some after she was sentenced to 10 years in prison for uploading videos of protest events that followed the country’s recent presidential elections. Her sentence was then commuted and she was issued a fine of $285,000.
