Stocks Drift as Uncertainty About the Economy Persists

Stocks continue to drift above and below the flatline in early afternoon action as economic headwinds continue to hamper the market. Cisco Systems issued a soft outlook, raising concerns about capital spending, while retailers posted sluggish same-store sales, though shares have turned higher, suggesting the weak reports had been discounted. Elsewhere, MBIA, Inc. will raise additional capital, Prudential and GlaxoSmithKline missed the Street's profit estimate, International Paper beat, and PepsiCo reconfirmed its outlook. In economic news, pending home sales remain in a down trend, and jobless claims dropped less than forecast.

The Dow is off 31.13, or 0.26 percent, to 12,168.97 after fluctuating between gains and losses. Broader stock indicators also edged lower. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 1.35, or 0.10 percent, to 1,325.10. The technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index fell 9.45, or 0.41 percent, to 2,269.30.

Government bonds slipped. The 10-year Treasury note's yield was at 3.63 percent, up from 3.60 percent late Wednesday.

The dollar was mostly higher against other major currencies, while gold prices rose

Light, sweet crude oil rose 2 cents to $87.16 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Oil prices appear to be on a gradual decline, so it's possible a slower economy is keeping inflation from accelerating. Still, many market participants are anxious about how much longer the Federal Reserve can continue to lower interest rates given relatively high food and energy costs.
