Mitt Romney Cites National Security as Reason for Dropping Presidential Bid

Mitt Romney dropped his bid to earn the Republican Party nomination on Thursday in hopes that it would provide the GOP with an opportunity to mount a strong enough campaign to keep the Democrats out of the White House come November.

In revealing his decision to end his campaign Romney stated “If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention … I’d forestall the launch of a national campaign and frankly I’d be making make it easier for Senator Clinton or Obama to win.”

Romney followed that comment with a shot at Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton by implying a vote for either one of them would be a risk to national security, “Frankly, in this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign, be a part of aiding a surrender to terror.”

The decision to suspend his campaign shocked many Romney supporters but following a disappointing Super Tuesday in which he lost further ground to John McCain the move wasn’t completely unexpected.

Following the Super Tuesday results Romney vowed to continue his campaign all the way to the convention but backed down from those sentiments on Thursday and noted, “If this were only about me, I’d go on, but it’s never been only about me. I entered this race because I love America, and because I love America in this time of war, I feel I have to now stand aside, for our party and for our country.”
