Five people, including a police officer, were killed Thursday as a man barricaded himself inside a Los Angeles house that caught fire during the standoff.
Police shot the gunman to death Thursday morning after a cat-and-mouse hunt in the burning house.
It is uncertain if a police "flash-bang" device started the fire, or the suspect may have set it.
SWAT Officer Randal Simmons, 51, was shot to death and Officer James Veenstra, also 51, was seriously wounded about 12:30 a.m. Thursday.
Officers reported entering the home and finding two bodies and a wounded person. The wounded victim and the two officers who had been shot were rescued, but Simmons and the victim later died.
The wounded officer was in surgery early in the morning, and was expected to survive. His wife, Michelle Veenstra, is an LAPD captain.
