Six Missing after Georgia Sugar Refinery Blast

The Savannah, Ga. suburb of Port Wentworth was rocked on Thursday night after an explosion at a sugar refinery caused a massive fire and left several dozen injured. Officials have said that they are still trying to determine the location of six employees who were believed to be among the 100 or so working at the time.

At least 40 workers were taken to local hospitals and treated for various injuries related to the blast.

It is believed the explosion and fire at the Imperial Sugar refinery was cause by sugar dust but investigators have not had a chance to examine the building due to structural damage.

The building was considered by many to be a landmark in the Savannah area as it had housed the former Dixie Crystals plant before the company was bought out by Imperial in 1997.
