Stocks falter on Karachi violence

Karachi, Pakistan: (Dawn) The Karachi Stock Exchange dropped down 40 points on Thursday. The over night bullish trend could not be maintained due to violence that broke out in the city after killing of ANP’s (Awami National Party) leader on Wednesday evening. The city observed partial closure.

Body set up to meet EU fish standard

Islamabad, Pakistan: Mohammad Mian Soomro, The care taker Prime Minister of Pakistan, yesterday president a meeting and formed a steering committee that would look into the matter of fish exports to EU. The ban was levied by EU on import of fish from Pakistan.

The committee will ensure implementation of EU standard and take measures that will help in early lifting of the ban on the imports of fish and fish products to European Union.

Two suspects held in Benazir case

Islamabad, Pakistan: The police source confirmed that they have arrested two suspects who were connected with the killing of Late Benazir Bhutto. The persons arrested were being interrogated. Earlier at teenager, 15 year old Aitezaz was picked up by the law enforcing agencies who later admitted that he was the back suicide bomber if the first attempt of the former Prime Minister failed.

Plan to withdraw army officers from civil departments

“The army will meet only its constitutional obligations and help the civil administration maintain law and order, as and when required.” These were the words of General Ashfaq Pervaiz Kayani, The Chief of Army Staff when he was presiding 106th Corps Commander’s Conference. He also approved the plan of de-induction of army personals from civil departments.

India plans war games at Pokhran

New Delhi: Diplomats of friendly countries and Western observes will be invited to witness wargame exercise planned by India at Pokhran, near Pakistani border, next month. Land forces, armour ad air force will begin this exercise on March 19th. Pokhran in Rajasthan is the place where India tested its nuclear weapons in 1998 which drew International attention.

Commonwealth observers only if membership is restored

Quetta, Pakistan: In a pre election press conference held on Thursday, the care taker Information Minister Nisar Memom said that we will not allow any Commonwealth Obeservers to monitor the 18th February election till our membership is restored. Replying to question Mr. Nisar Memon said “If the Commonwealth recognises us then we will recognise them.”

Imran Khan again barred from entering Karachi
