Thai Troops Storm Protesters Camp, Anti-Government Leaders Surrender

The two-month long siege in Thailand’s capital of Bangkok has apparently ended after military troops stormed the protesters main camp, resulting in a number of leaders surrendering.

While the troops were restoring order within the camp there were still a number of hard-line protesters who continued to burn and loot buildings throughout the city, vowing to continue their fight until Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva resigns and new elections are held.

Those demands will likely go unheeded as the protesters lost almost all of their traction in the final siege with many of their leaders recognizing defeat as they were led away by police.

That final siege began early Wednesday morning as the military used armored vehicles to smash through barricades protecting the main camp in the city’s Lumpini Park area. Once past the barricades a number of soldiers armed with M-16 rifles moved through the camp as helicopters hovered above.

Thousands of protesters were allowed to leave the area but leaders of the demonstrations were detained by officials and taken to police stations.

Despite the major victory by the military there have been a number of red-shirts vowing to continue their protests. The military has said they will continue to keep a strong presence within the city and work to bring the protests to an end.
