More than 20,000 protesters took to the streets of downtown Bucharest on Wednesday, shouting down the Romanian government’s plans to institute a set of austerity measures that would include the cutting of jobs and slashing of pay for public sector workers.
Romania’s government is trying to secure a $25 billion loan from the IMF but in order to do so the country must eliminate nearly 70,000 state employees, cut pay by 25% and pensions by 15%, all moves that the public find unacceptable.
Unions organized Wednesday’s protests, busing in people from several different areas of the country and showing a united front against the government’s plans.
While the protesters have shouted down the efforts of Prime Minister Emil Boc and President Traian Basescu the government has insisted that the austerity measures were necessary to bring the country out of its recession.
