Kansas Teen Charged In Death of Dakota DeRemus

Dustin Howard has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of his classmate Dakota DeRemus. The 16-year-old is accused of accidentally killing DeRemus, also 16, during a fight.

Investigators say the fight was recorded on a witness’s cell phone. Both of the teens were sophomores at Gardener Edgerton High School. DeRemus went to school Monday but never returned home. His body was found near his house around 5 p.m. that afternoon. An autopsy showed DeRemus had a heart condition. His death was ruled a homicide.

Howard was put in a juvenile detention center. He attended a brief court hearing by satellite on Wednesday. The district attorney is pushing for Howard to be tried as an adult. Howard’s next hearing is set for February 19. He will be held in the detention center until that time.
