Imperial Sugar Explosion Leaves 6 Dead, 42 Injured

A sugar plant explosion near Savannah, Georgia has left 6 dead and 42 injured. The explosion happened at Imperial Sugar’s largest refinery around 7 p.m. yesterday. Around 100 workers were in the plant at the time.

Fire Commissioner John Oxendine said more people might be dead. “There’s a possibility there might be more,” he said.

The blast occurred in a silo, where the sugar is stored. Imperial Chief Executive Officer John Sheptor said it was caused by a “sugar dust explosion.”

The Port Wentworth refinery has temporarily been shut down. “A good majority of the facility has been damaged by smoke and fire,” said fire captain Matthew Stanley.

Fire officials say they are trying to clear some of the debris.
