Imperial Sugar Refinery Blast in Port Wentworth, Ga. Blamed for Three Deaths, Several Still Missing

State fire officials have confirmed that three bodies have been retrieved from the Imperial Sugar refinery plant located in Port Wentworth, Ga. following a large explosion believed to be caused by sugar dust on Thursday night.

The three bodies were said to be discovered in tunnels that run along the bottom of the building and with up to 20 employees still missing many fear the death toll could rise significantly.

Savannah-Chatham County Police Chief Michael Berkow told The Associated Press “At this point, we expect to find fatalities inside the building. I don't know how many, but that's what we expect.”
