Thailand Extends Curfew in Bangkok for Additional Three Days

Thailand has extended an expansive curfew by an additional three days, hoping to bring order to a country that has been paralyzed by a violent standoff between government and red-shirt protesters demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.

While military troops stormed the protesters main camp in Bangkok and detained several leaders there are still a number of anti-government red shirts who have continued to set fire to buildings, loot and fire shots at troops.

As many as 60 people have died since the protesters first took parts of Bangkok two months ago. The government had been demanding the demonstrations end and on Wednesday their patience had run out, using armored vehicles and troops to move through barricades and take control of the camp.

Leaders of the protest surrendered, recognizing the death toll would only climb higher but there remain several pockets of resistance among the most hard-line protesters.

The government is now trying to keep these protester sat bay, instituting a curfew in Bangkok as well as 23 provinces within the country.  That curfew, from 11:00 pm to 5:00 am, already in place on Wednesday will continue through Saturday.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva addressed the nation in a television appearance on Wednesday saying he was “confident and determined to end the problems and return the country to peace and order once again.”
