Cuban President Raul Castro Meets with Leaders of Roman Catholic Church

Cuban President Raul Castro has met with Cardinal Jaime Ortega, the head of the Roman Catholic Church in Cuba, to discuss the issue of imprisoned political dissidents.

Ortega was joined by the Archbishop of Santiago, Dionisio Garcia, for the rare meeting that is being hailed as a first step toward potentially seeing some of those prisoners freed. The second step could come next month as the Vatican sends its foreign secretary Archbishop Dominique Memberti to the island to further push the cause.

Talks between Castro the Church leaders took place on Wednesday, a meeting that comes following Ortega’s successful mediation between authorities and the wives and female relatives of jailed dissidents. Know as the Ladies in White, the wives and female relatives had marched in Havana to protest the government’s continued detention of those who have spoke out against the political system.
