Detroit has had a rough go of it over the years and it doesn’t appear like the bloodletting will subside as the Motor City was slapped with Forbes’ number one spot on their inaugural America’s Most Miserable Cities list.
Using the six factors of unemployment, personal tax rates, commute times, weather, crime and toxic waste Forbes ranked the largest 150 metropolitan cities and Detroit had the dubious distinction as America’s Most Miserable City.
Of course Detroit had company close to home as Flint was handed the number three spot on the Forbes list. Both Detroit and Flint suffer from high unemployment and are often among the most violent cities in the country.
The same could be said for Stockton, California which landed at number two on the list. As with Detroit, Stockton had some in-state company as Los Angeles popped in at number seven on the list due largely to its long commute times and taxes.
New York wasn’t immune to the Misery as the Big Apple fell in at number four according to Forbes as the city was mired in the nation’s longest commute times and highest tax rates.
Philadelphia, recently dubbed Killadelphia for its violent crime rate landed at number five on the list and was followed by Chicago which scored poorly for its weather and commute time.
California was handed its third city on the list as Modesto was placed at number eight. The south was hit with a surprise as Charlotte came in at number nine as the unemployment rate continued to climb and violent crime was extremely high.
Providence, R.I. rounded out the America’s Most Miserable Cities as high tax rates and violent crime condemned the city to the inaugural list created by Forbes.
