Mothers of American Hikers Held in Iran Meet Children

The mothers of the three American hikers who have been held in Iran since last July finally had an opportunity to meet their children, enjoying a two-hour reunion in Tehran before once again appealing to the government to release their children as a “humanitarian gesture.”

Iranian officials have held the three Americans; Shane Bauer, 27, Sarah Shourd, 31, and Josh Fattal, 27, on espionage charges. Those charges have been strongly denied by the Americans who maintain that they inadvertently crossed an unmarked border into Iran while hiking in Iraq’s northern Kurdistan region.

Despite those denials Iran has insisted the three have ties to U.S. intelligence and maintain they knew what they were doing when the illegally entered the country.

The three hikers have been held in Tehran’s Evin prison but Sarah Shourd is being held separate from the two men.
