U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said that North Korea must face international consequences for the sinking of a South Korean warship two months ago, telling reporters after a meeting with Japanese Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada “This will not be and cannot be business as usual. There must be an international, not just a regional, but an international response.”
An investigation conducted by an international team of experts concluded that there was enough evidence to support the claim that North Korea launched a torpedo that struck the Cheonan, causing the navy warship to sink and kill 46 sailors.
While the North continues to deny any involvement in the sinking the evidence gathered by the investigation team included fragments of a torpedo that bore North Korean markings. Clinton was comfortable indicting the North, saying “The torpedo that sunk the Cheonan... was fired by a North Korean submarine.”
Since the report was issued earlier this week there have been renewed calls for heavier sanctions against the North but the communist country has warned that any such action would result in the declaration of war.
