Warren Buffet’s Bond Offer Fuels Market Surge
Stocks remain solidly in the green with financials leading the way, supported by Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway offer of up to $800 billion in reinsurance to some of the struggling bond insurers. The Bush administration's plan to help homeowners avoid foreclosure is also adding to the favorable backdrop. In other equity news, General Motors reported 4Q profits and a plan to offer buyouts or early retirement to UAW employees. Additionally, Monsanto raised its full-year EPS guidance, Marsh & McLennan and Masco Corp. missed earnings estimates, Schering Plough topped, and Qwest matched.
In midday trading, the Dow rose 189.08, or 1.54 percent, to 12,429.09. Broader stock indicators also moved higher. The Standard & Poor's 500 index advanced 17.30, or 1.29 percent, to 1,356.43, and the Nasdaq composite index rose 21.19, or 0.91 percent, to 2,341.25.
Bond prices are lower. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note, which moves opposite its price, rose to 3.69 percent from 3.63 percent late Monday.
The dollar was mixed against other major currencies, while gold prices fell.
Light, sweet crude fell 82 cents to $92.77 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
