President Barack Obama Names Heads of Independent Commission to Investigate Gulf of Mexico Oil Disaster

President Barack Obama has named a pair of political heavyweights to head up an independent commission to investigate the oil spill that has devastated the coastal region of the Gulf of Mexico. Former Democratic Senator Bob Graham and former Republican environment chief William Reilly will be in charge of the investigation into not only what led up to the oil spill but the immediate response that followed.

Obama assured that there would be no government employee or public official on the seven-member panel investigating the incident but the remaining five members have yet to be named.

During hi weekly radio address Obama stated “The purpose of this commission is to consider both the root causes of the disaster and offer options on what safety and environmental precautions we need to take to prevent a similar disaster from happening again.”

It’s been more than a month since an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig ruptured a well in the Gulf of Mexico, spewing millions of gallons of oil into the water. That oil spill has now made its way to the coasts of Louisiana, and Florida and threatens to hit Cuba as the currents carry the slick further.

While BP, which was leasing the Transocean-owned oil rig, has carried the weight of the responsibility for the disaster that left 11 oil workers dead the government has been the subject of heavy criticism as well.
