Former Bill Clinton campaign manager David Wilhelm announced Wednesday that he is endorsing Sen. Barack Obama for president.
Wilhelm, the manager for Bill Clinton's successful 1992 presidential campaign and former chair of the Democratic National Committee, announced his decision via a conference call with reporters. Wilhelm is a key super-delegate who was expected to endorse his former boss' wife, Sen. Hillary Clinton.
“He has momentum, perhaps undeniable momentum among Democratic primary voters,” Wilhelm explained. “We should embrace the candidate who owns change, who owns optimism, who owns the future, who owns idealism, who knows that change is is competitive advantage and is prepared to drive that message of discipline and enthusiasm at every opportunity.”
“The Obama campaign has overcome truly daunting organizational odds," Wilhelm added, "not to mention the aura of inevitability and that should provide Democrats with confidence.”
Wilhelm is not the only person formerly aligned with former President Bill Clinton to give their endorsements for Obama over Sen. Hillary Clinton.
“I think there are a lot of people who were for Bill Clinton who are for Barack Obama today," Obama senior advisor David Axelrod told reporters, "so he represents a whole group of people who are coming our way.”
Aníbal Salvador Acevedo Vilá, the governor of Puerto Rico, has also announced his endorsement of Obama Wednesday. Puerto Rico has 55 pledged delegates and eight super-delegates, including Acevedo.
