Political Detainees in Cuba Earn Concessions Following Talks Between Authorities and Roman Catholic Leaders

Following Wednesday’s talks between Cuban President Raul Castro and the Roman Catholic Church’s Cardinal Jaime Ortega and the Archbishop of Santiago de Cuba, Dionisio Garcia the country has reportedly agreed to ease conditions against political detainees.

As part of the improved conditions prisoners who have been held far from their homes will be moved closer and those detainees who are sick will be admitted to hospitals.

Human Rights groups have been fighting for improved conditions for detainees but the Cuban government has long held a belief that they had no political prisoners, only mercenaries hired by the United States to undermine the Cuban system.

The Roman Catholic Church stepped in on the behalf of those political prisoners, requesting from Castro that the government ease the conditions.
