Standard Missile 3 To Be Used To Shoot Down Satellite

The Pentagon may be used to shoot down a U.S. spy satellite. Officials said President Bush decided to use a missile to bring down the satellite because it may fall to Earth in early March. Officials say the satellite’s rocket fuel poses a danger to people as it contains toxic chemicals that can affect breathing.

The missile will be launched from a Navy ship. Vice Chairman of Joint Chief of Staff General James Cartwright says this is the first time anything like this has been tried. “This is the first time we’ve used a tactical missile to engage a spacecraft,” said Cartwright.

The satellite needs to be hit prior to entering the Earth’s atmosphere as it will be “next to impossible” once it is inside the atmosphere.
